Cause 3: Deteriorating Internal Wiring
Inside the water heater housing, wiring connects the elements and thermostats to the power supply. In older units, that wiring can deteriorate at the insulation, at terminal connections, or at points where corrosion has worked its way in. A compromised conductor creates a ground fault with the same result at the breaker. The difference is that the fault traces back to the conductor, not the component it serves.
Wiring faults inside an aging water heater aren’t visible from the outside. They don’t produce the temperature pattern of a thermostat fault. They don’t follow the heating-cycle timing of an element short either. That’s why a technician’s visual inspection of internal connections is part of the diagnostic sequence rather than an afterthought. Running a unit with degraded internal wiring extends the fault window and makes a more involved repair more likely.
Cause 4: A Breaker That Has Worn Out
Breakers have a service life of their own. A breaker that has been tripped and reset many times can lose its calibration. It may start tripping at load levels it was originally rated to handle without issue. The water heater may be functioning within normal parameters while a worn breaker interprets that draw as a fault.
This is worth ruling out early because it’s the simplest path to resolution. If the breaker is the source, replacing it restores normal operation without any work on the water heater itself.
